Bloodborne Pathogens Training for the Workplace

This online Bloodborne Pathogens course is designed for employees who may reasonably encounter blood, bodily fluids, sharps, contaminated materials, or other potentially infectious materials while performing their work.

The course covers occupational exposure risks, routes of exposure, exposure prevention, standard precautions, personal protective equipment, sharps safety, cross-contamination, cleaning and decontamination principles, and appropriate response following an exposure incident.

Real-world workplace scenarios demonstrate how contamination can transfer between people, gloves, tools, equipment, vehicles, work areas, and frequently touched surfaces.

This course is appropriate for personnel working in custodial and janitorial services, property management, maintenance, hospitality, security, public works, parks and recreation, schools, facilities operations, sanitation, and other occupations where incidental exposure to blood or bodily fluids may occur.

Participants must complete the required course material and successfully pass the final knowledge assessment to complete the course.

Important: Employers are responsible for providing workplace-specific information and training required by applicable regulations, including their Exposure Control Plan, site-specific procedures, and information concerning occupational exposures applicable to the employee’s duties.

Section 1: Bloodborne Pathogens: Introduction & Exposure Risks
Introduces the fundamentals of bloodborne pathogens and occupational exposure risks encountered by law-enforcement and public-safety personnel. Participants will learn how exposure can occur through blood and other potentially infectious materials, common routes of transmission, and how everyday workplace activities can create exposure and cross-contamination risks.

Section 2: Exposure Prevention & Personal Protective Equipment
This section focuses on preventing occupational exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials through standard precautions, appropriate personal protective equipment, safe work practices, and contamination control. Participants will learn how to select, use, remove, and dispose of PPE while reducing the risk of transferring contamination to clothing, tools, equipment, vehicles, work areas, and other people or surfaces.

Section 3: Sharps Hazards & Exposure Response
Sharps Hazards & Exposure Response Employees in many workplaces may encounter needles, syringes, broken glass, blades, or other sharp objects capable of causing a puncture or cut. These hazards may be visible or concealed in trash, bags, furniture, landscaping, restrooms, vehicles, containers, or other work areas. This section covers recognizing and avoiding sharps hazards, preventing needlestick injuries, safely responding to potentially contaminated sharps, and taking appropriate action following an occupational exposure. Participants will also learn the basic steps for reporting an exposure incident and obtaining prompt post-exposure medical evaluation and follow-up.

Section 4: Contamination Control & Decontamination
This section focuses on controlling contamination after blood or other potentially infectious materials are encountered. Participants will learn how contamination can spread from the original area to gloves, clothing, tools, equipment, vehicles, work areas, and other surfaces. The section covers practical methods for containing contaminated areas, preventing cross-contamination, identifying items requiring cleaning or decontamination, and recognizing when specialized biohazard remediation may be necessary.

Section 5: Regulatory Requirements & Employer-Specific Procedures
This section addresses regulatory and employer-specific elements of Bloodborne Pathogens exposure prevention, including the applicable Bloodborne Pathogens standard, the employer’s Exposure Control Plan, engineering and work-practice controls, Hepatitis B vaccination, biohazard signs and labels, emergency procedures, exposure reporting, medical follow-up, and access to the course trainer for questions.

Section 6: Workplace Scenarios & Final Review
This section brings together the principles covered throughout the course through practical workplace scenarios. Participants will apply bloodborne pathogen exposure prevention, PPE, sharps safety, cross-contamination control, decontamination, and exposure-response principles to situations they may encounter in the workplace.
