This online Bloodborne Pathogens course is designed for biohazard remediation professionals and other workers who may encounter blood, bodily fluids, sharps, contaminated materials, equipment, vehicles, structures, and other potentially infectious materials during the performance of their duties.
The course covers occupational exposure risks, routes of exposure, Universal Precautions, personal protective equipment, sharps safety, cross-contamination prevention, cleaning and decontamination principles, and appropriate response following an exposure incident.
Industry-specific scenarios demonstrate how bloodborne pathogen exposure can occur during trauma scene remediation, unattended death cleanup, vehicle decontamination, sharps handling, waste handling, and other biohazard remediation activities.
Participants must complete the required course material and successfully pass the final knowledge assessment to complete the course.

- Section 1 — Bloodborne Pathogen FundamentalsBloodborne Pathogen Fundamentals This section introduces bloodborne pathogens and the occupational exposure risks encountered during biohazard remediation. Participants will learn how blood and other potentially infectious materials can transmit disease, common routes of occupational exposure, and how Universal Precautions apply when working in contaminated environments. The section establishes the foundation for safely approaching trauma scenes, unattended deaths, sharps hazards, contaminated vehicles, structures, equipment, and waste.3
- Section 2 — Universal Precautions & Personal Protective EquipmentThis section explains how Universal Precautions, personal protective equipment, and safe work practices are applied during biohazard remediation. Participants will learn how to evaluate contamination hazards, select appropriate PPE, prevent cross-contamination, and safely use and remove protective equipment when working in contaminated environments.4
- Section 3 — Sharps Safety & Exposure IncidentsThis section addresses sharps hazards and occupational exposure incidents encountered during biohazard remediation. Participants will learn safe practices for identifying and handling contaminated sharps, preventing needlestick and puncture injuries, and responding appropriately when an exposure incident occurs.3
- Section 4 — Cleaning, Decontamination & Contamination ControlThis section covers cleaning and decontamination practices used to control bloodborne pathogen hazards during biohazard remediation. Participants will learn how to evaluate contaminated surfaces and materials, prevent the spread of contamination, apply appropriate cleaning and disinfection principles, and recognize when materials may require removal rather than surface treatment.4
- Section 5 — Exposure Control, Hepatitis B & Workplace RequirementsThis section explains key workplace requirements for controlling occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Participants will learn about the employer’s Exposure Control Plan, engineering and work-practice controls, Hepatitis B vaccination, biohazard communication, regulated waste, and the workplace procedures employees must understand and follow.3
- Section 6 — Workplace Application & Course CompletionThis section brings the course concepts together and applies them to workplace procedures and real-world biohazard remediation operations. Participants will review employer-specific responsibilities, exposure reporting, access to the Exposure Control Plan, and how to obtain additional information or ask questions about bloodborne pathogen safety.2
